Backup Internet & Automatic Failover Installation
Keep a second internet path ready for outages. Sentry Audio Video designs and installs compatible backup internet and automatic failover for homes, businesses and boats, using an assessed combination of wired, Starlink or cellular services.
Automatic Switchover When the Main Connection Fails
A compatible multi-WAN router monitors the preferred connection and switches traffic to a configured backup when its health checks identify a failure. Supported recovery settings return traffic to the preferred service when it is healthy again. We configure and test the behavior for the installed equipment instead of assuming that a second modem automatically provides failover.
Choose an Appropriate Backup Connection
Assess Starlink, an independent wired provider or suitable cellular service against coverage, capacity, recurring cost and installation conditions. Two connections that share an upstream path or power dependency may fail together. The assessment considers those dependencies and the devices that must remain connected during an outage. Provider subscriptions and data allowances are confirmed separately.
Routers, UniFi Gateways & Existing Equipment
Review WAN interfaces, router capacity, current firmware and supported failover features. Suitable UniFi gateways and other compatible multi-WAN platforms can be incorporated into the design. Existing switches, access points and wiring may remain where condition and compatibility permit. The proposal defines equipment, configuration and any required network changes.
Protect the Traffic That Matters
Identify work devices, phones, cameras, payment systems, cloud applications or supported automation services that need the backup path. We assess routing rules, bandwidth priorities and guest access where appropriate. VPNs, remote viewing and hosted services require individual checks because provider addressing and connection behavior can differ between primary and backup links.
Failover, Failback & Session Continuity
Automatic failover can restore internet access without manually changing cables. It does not promise zero downtime: detection takes time and changing the external internet address can interrupt active calls, VPN sessions or streams. Load balancing distributes connections; bonding and session-preserving services are separate designs. We explain what the proposed equipment does and test the agreed applications.
Power Backup & Outage Testing
Review power for the router, internet terminals, switches and relevant access points. A UPS can help with brief interruptions but runtime depends on its capacity and connected load. Commissioning includes simulated loss of the primary connection, confirmation of the backup path, restoration testing and a check of the priority applications. We document the result and how to identify which connection is active.
Upgrades, Repairs & Network Takeovers
Assess existing failover installations that never switch, switch too often or cannot restore the primary link correctly. We review cables, addressing, health checks, subscriptions and equipment configuration. The scope identifies compatible upgrades, repairs or reconfiguration, with authorized account access and handoff documentation for the owner or business team.
Installation Questions
Can Starlink automatically take over from my main internet provider?
Yes, with an active suitable Starlink service and a compatible multi-WAN router configured for health monitoring and failover. We assess the installation and test switchover.
Will an ongoing phone call continue without interruption?
Not necessarily. Standard failover can interrupt active sessions when the internet path or public address changes. Special continuity requirements need a separate design.
Does backup internet work during a power outage?
The required network equipment needs power. We assess UPS or other supported power arrangements and explain the expected limits.
Can this be installed on a yacht?
Yes, subject to vessel, provider, hardware and installation requirements. Marine networking and Starlink service plans are assessed for the operating area.
